Swirnow and Dormitories!

The Hambro® Composite Floor System continues to be the intelligent choice for student housing as Swirnow Structures LLC will be supplying over 600,000 square feet Hambro D500 floor joists for five east coast projects.

Construction of the first new residential building erected on St. John's College Annapolis campus since 1958 is scheduled to begin later this month, with a new dormitory that should be available for occupancy in fall 2004. The project architect is Ziger/Snead Inc. of Baltimore, MD; Bovis Lend Lease, Inc. of Bethesda, MD is the general contractor; and Morabito Consultants of Baltimore, MD is the structural engineer.

At the Sacred Heart University in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Hambro will be used in a student housing facility that will provide rooms for more than 2,000 resident students. According to Bernie Gilmore, marketing director for Sacred Heart, construction is expected to begin on September 13, 2003 for completion by September of 2004. Klewin Building Company of Fairfield, CT is the general contractor; Rose Tiso & Co., also of Fairfield, is the architect; and Christie Engineering of Chester, NJ is the structural engineer.

At Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland, Hambro joists will be used in a 6-story dormitory scheduled for completion in 2004. Gilford Corporation of Beltsville, MD is the general contractor; Grimm + Parker of Calverton, MD is the architect; and Wolfman & Associates P.C. of Silver Spring, MD is the structural engineer.

Swirnow and Hambro are no strangers to the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of Maryland Baltimore County , where students are already enjoying the benefits of the Hambro floor system. At the College Park campus, Swirnow and Hambro will be making their fifth and sixth appearances, while UMBC will be seeing them for the sixth time.

"Repeat business is not unusual for us," says John Stahl, Vice President/Sales for Swirnow. "The Hambro System has already proven itself a winner with dormitory projects throughout the mid-Atlantic. The system has many benefits that make it a logical choice for this type of construction."
